Netflix and Chill just went interstellar! Literally!

In a move to make space exploration more accessible to the public, NASA, the American Space Agency has teamed up with Netflix, the giant streaming service to bring space content including rocket launches and moonwalks live on your TV screens.

Bringing Outer Space a little closer to home:

Space once a far-off concept came into human reach when Neil Armstrong proclaimed “That’s one step for man, One Giant leap for mankind” when he became the first person to walk on the moon.

Little did he know that in less than sixty years of this phenomenal feat, the same space will be in humanity’s palms, literally viewed in real time through phones and tablets. People will be viewing livestreams of the international space station, astronauts’ moonwalks and much more from the comfort of their couches. From streaming cartoons and dreaming of stars as kids, humanity just went into streaming stars in real time.

The thought behind this collaboration:

In this capitalist world, you might ask what is to gain from this partnership. NASA already streams its content free of cost from its NASA plus platform yet the content suffers from low reach and visibility. With Netflix this reach increases manifolds as stated by Marc Atkind, NASA’s communications chief, the goal is clear: make space achievements accessible to as many people as possible and inspire future generations. NASA has stated that its goal is to reach a wider audience and inspire future scientists and astronauts by riding on Netflix’s over 700 million subscriptions worldwide.

But what does Netflix get out of this. It gives the streaming giant room to expand into live streaming and live TV. By teaming up with NASA, Netflix has raised the bar for all other similar platforms and proved that it is indeed the leader in this race.

Public’s Reaction:

Many space enthusiasts around the world hailed this move with teachers and parents alike commending Netflix’s efforts in making STEM and space more accessible for everyone yet there has been those who were not very impressed.
Users took to forums like X (former Twitter) and Reddit to point out that NASA already has its own streaming platform NASA+ while others pointed out how previous Netflix livestreams of events like NBA failed. Some even commented on the financial downfall of the agency when it has to rely on private streaming services to raise revenue. While others mocked Netflix for running out of content and being left with stargazing alone.

Final verdict about entertainments new frontier:

This unprecedented partnership takes both space exploration and entertainment into new territories. Space exploration, once only a geopolitical move and a race between two super powers of the world has now been transformed into something entirely magical yet within our grasp. This would open up entirely new possibilities in the scientific content genre and may even inspire the next generation for greater space exploration. It’s a cameo we didn’t know we needed. Netflix is making space great again!
